Madrid, May 4: World number one Jannik Sinner triumphed over Alexander Zverev to secure the men’s singles title at the Mutua Madrid Open. This victory marks Sinner’s fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, a historic achievement.
In a dominant 58-minute match, the Italian player won with a score of 6-1, 6-2, maintaining his impressive form at the elite level. With this win, Sinner becomes the first player to claim five consecutive Masters 1000 titles since the series began in 1990, showcasing his exceptional prowess on all surfaces.
From the outset, Sinner established control over the match. He broke Zverev’s serve early on, denying him any chance to find his rhythm. Sinner capitalized on all four of his break points and faced no break points on his own serve. His first serve accuracy was remarkable, winning 93 percent of those points and demonstrating precise control during rallies from the baseline.
ATP quoted Sinner saying, “I started the match very well and broke his serve immediately. He wasn’t at his best today, so I tried to play aggressively. I’m very happy with the level of play I’m showing. Winning another title like this is incredible. It means a lot to me. This has been another fantastic tournament.”
The Madrid title is Sinner’s ninth Masters 1000 title, marking the peak of an impressive run that began last October when he retired in Shanghai. Since then, the 24-year-old has won titles in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and now Madrid, losing only a few sets across all these tournaments.
Notably, Sinner is the first player to win all four Masters 1000 tournaments at the start of this season. He previously completed the ‘Sunshine Double’ without dropping a set and defeated Carlos Alcaraz in Monte-Carlo.
The Italian player stands on the brink of achieving even greater milestones. He is just one title away from completing the prestigious ‘Career Golden Masters,’ a feat accomplished only by Novak Djokovic. Sinner will have the opportunity to achieve this at the upcoming Rome Masters, held on home soil.
