Kolkata, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Sikkim’s Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang, inaugurated the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) fourth mountaineering expedition, ‘Shikhar,’ for Mount Jongsong on September 4. This peak stands at 7,462 meters and is located along the borders of China and Nepal. The expedition is set to run from September 4 to October 11, involving a team of 41 members.
An NDRF official stated that this expedition will test the team’s mountaineering skills, operational readiness, physical and mental endurance, courage, discipline, determination, and teamwork. During the flag-off ceremony, CM Tamang wished the team success in this daring endeavor.
He reflected on the devastating earthquake that struck Sikkim in 2011, recalling how the NDRF responded promptly, providing significant assistance to the people through their rescue and relief operations. Despite challenging conditions, NDRF personnel demonstrated readiness, bravery, and dedication while carrying out their duties.
The Chief Minister also mentioned the 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) disaster, highlighting the NDRF’s efforts in reaching remote and high-altitude areas to deliver essential aid to affected communities. He praised the commitment and courage shown by NDRF personnel in such difficult geographical situations.
Tamang acknowledged a recent tunnel operation and expressed gratitude towards the dedicated rescuers of the NDRF. He commended their professionalism and commitment during challenging rescue operations. He expressed confidence that the Sikkim government and the NDRF would continue to collaborate effectively, ensuring prompt and impactful responses during disasters to minimize loss of life and property.
An official noted that CM Tamang appreciated the ongoing efforts of the NDRF in disaster management, thanking all personnel for their dedicated service. The event was attended by Sikkim’s Chief Secretary Ravindra Telang, Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva, and NDRF Director General Piyush Anand, among other dignitaries and expedition team members.
Guests toured an equipment gallery showcasing specialized tools and resources used by the NDRF in challenging mountainous operations. A presentation was also given to demonstrate the NDRF’s capabilities, preparedness, and commitment to aiding during disasters.
