Mumbai, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : The Maharashtra government has made a significant decision to bolster the historical mounted unit of the Mumbai Police. On September 4, 2026, the government approved the creation of 70 new positions specifically for “mounted players.” This decision was formalized through a government order issued by the Home Department.
According to the order, these new roles will have the same salary scale as the existing positions. The current 70 positions will be surrendered to the government, and in their place, 70 new roles within the mounted player cadre will be established at the same pay level. This means that there will be no increase in the total number of authorized positions within the police department; rather, the existing roles will be reorganized into the new cadre.
The proposal for this change originated from the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s office. It emphasized that hiring professional equestrians was essential to enhance the mounted unit’s efficiency. This proposal received approval during a high-level secretariat meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary on July 6, 2026. Following this endorsement, the Home Department issued the order.
Additionally, the government has instructed that separate service entry rules be established for the mounted police unit to ensure a clear and transparent recruitment process for equestrians.
The order also clarified that no additional positions or funds would be allocated beyond the specified 70 roles. Management of horse health, nutrition, and stabling must be conducted within the available resources.
The Mumbai Police’s mounted unit is not only crucial for crowd control and patrolling but also represents the pride of the police force. The unit has achieved recognition in national equestrian competitions, enhancing the reputation of the Mumbai Police. The appointment of new players is expected to improve the unit’s operational capabilities and strengthen its presence in the sports arena.
