Bengaluru, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : A Virgin Atlantic flight bound for London had to return to Bengaluru shortly after takeoff due to a technical malfunction. The aircraft, carrying approximately 270 passengers, departed from Kempegowda International Airport on Sunday morning.
According to an airport official, the crew detected a problem shortly after takeoff. Before making the decision to return, the plane circled over Tumkur for over 30 minutes. The flight ultimately made an emergency landing back at Kempegowda International Airport for safety reasons.
The nature of the technical issue has not yet been disclosed, and airport authorities are investigating the incident to determine why the aircraft had to return. The decision to turn back was made when the crew identified the issue shortly after takeoff.
Flight VS317, operated by Virgin Atlantic, was scheduled to travel from Bengaluru to London Heathrow. Current flight data indicates that the Boeing 787-9 took off around 8:20 AM on September 6.
A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic confirmed that the flight returned to Bengaluru shortly after departure due to the technical issue. In a statement, they noted, “The aircraft landed safely, and the flight was subsequently canceled.”
The airline emphasized that the safety of its customers and crew is always its top priority. They also expressed sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused and stated that their teams are working diligently to assist affected passengers and rebook them on the next available flights.
Virgin Atlantic is part of the Virgin Group, which holds a 51% stake in the airline, while Delta Air Lines owns the remaining 49%. Delta acquired its share in 2013 from Singapore Airlines, which was part of a joint-venture transatlantic partnership.
