Beijing, August 24: In recent years, the Nagari region of Tibet has placed significant emphasis on the development of its livestock industry. Following approvals from the Nagari regional CPC committee and the Gerze County CPC committee, a yak breeding farm has been established in Gerze County.
It is reported that the region is home to a hybrid breed of yaks, which includes both wild blood yaks and domesticated yaks, primarily found in Gerze County.
The population of wild blood yaks has seen a rapid increase in recent years. By the end of 2025, the total number of wild blood yaks in the county reached 5,271. Among these, 535 yaks are housed at the yak breeding farm in Gerze County. In 2025, the farm welcomed the birth of 42 calves, which are growing well and developing effectively.
Looking ahead, Gerze County will continue to collaborate with experts from the Agricultural Science Academy of the Tibet Autonomous Region for scientific research aimed at developing new yak varieties. This initiative will involve studying the genetic and germplasm resources of the wild blood yaks and aims to enhance the quality and production capacity of the yak industry.
Moreover, Gerze County will persist in its efforts to secure policy and financial support to protect germplasm resources and increase the population of wild blood yaks.
