New Delhi, September 2: BJP leader Shazia Ilmi has responded to actress Swara Bhasker’s recent comments, emphasizing the importance of understanding historical events within their social and political contexts.
Ilmi stated that incomplete knowledge can be dangerous. She accused Bhasker of making comments without fully grasping historical references. Regarding the practice of Jauhar, Ilmi argued that it should not be viewed through the lens of modern sexual violence. She referenced medieval history, wars, and the exploitation of women during those times, citing the example of ISIS capturing Yazidi women to illustrate the severe atrocities faced by women across different historical periods.
Ilmi asserted that the Jauhar of Rajput women should be understood in the context of the circumstances, honor, and social structures of wartime. Defining any historical practice solely from a contemporary perspective overlooks the complexities of history. She accused Bhasker of viewing Indian traditions through a biased ideological lens. Ilmi stressed the necessity of understanding the historical and social context before criticizing patriarchy.
On the controversial remarks made by the Grand Mufti of Kerala regarding women, Ilmi stated that such views do not align with India’s constitutional values. She pointed out that many women in Muslim countries are actively working in various fields, making it unjustifiable to advocate for their exclusion from public life. Ilmi challenged Congress and its allies, questioning whether they would compromise the constitution in support of such views. She also demanded a clear statement from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on this issue.
Ilmi emphasized that mere slogans are insufficient. There must be a clear constitutional perspective on women’s freedom and equality. Any notion of restricting women to domestic spaces in India is unacceptable. The constitution grants women equal rights, and no religious or political ideology can supersede this constitutional framework.
Additionally, Ilmi criticized Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav for using AI-generated videos that depict Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inappropriately. She argued that while AI technology can be used for creative and positive purposes, it is inappropriate to use it to portray a political figure in a fictional and objectionable manner. Ilmi accused Yadav of lacking real issues to discuss against Adityanath, resorting instead to fictional videos, which she described as a decline in political thought and conduct.
