Bengaluru, September 3: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated on Wednesday that the character of Sita in the Ramayana is far greater than that of Lord Ram. He praised Sita’s sacrifices and struggles as a source of inspiration for women.
While addressing successful women entrepreneurs who have overcome challenges to build their businesses, he referred to them as role models for society.
Shivakumar emphasized that Sita’s character and sacrifices in the Ramayana are truly inspirational. He noted that women are creators, and those who have faced challenges to establish their businesses serve as role models.
He made these remarks during the inauguration of the fifth edition of “Together We Grow—International Women Entrepreneurship Day,” organized by the Ubuntu Consortium of Women Entrepreneurs Association at the FKCCI auditorium in Bengaluru.
The Chief Minister also highlighted Congress leader Sonia Gandhi as an example of women’s sacrifice and leadership. He mentioned the numerous difficulties Gandhi faced, including the deaths of Indira Gandhi and her husband. Despite these challenges, she led the party and chose to step aside for economist Manmohan Singh, showcasing the essence of a woman’s sacrifice. Women nurture and shape leaders, he added.
Shivakumar reiterated that Sita’s character and sacrifices are greater than those of Lord Ram. He commended women entrepreneurs who have built their businesses against all odds.
He stressed the need for women’s leadership from village councils to Parliament, affirming his government’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
Shivakumar expressed strong faith in the power of youth and women, mentioning the government’s five guarantee schemes. Under the Shakti scheme, women can travel for free on state buses, boosting their confidence and independence.
He also highlighted the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which provides 1.22 crore women with ₹2,000 monthly, aiding them in managing their families.
The government has implemented several programs for women, including loans at four percent interest, subsidies, and the Stree Shakti scheme. Approximately 40 percent of degree-holding doctors each year are women. He emphasized that women are not limited to household roles; they are also capable thinkers and entrepreneurs.
Referring to the Ubuntu initiative, the Chief Minister noted that thousands of dreams have been realized through this platform and urged women to move forward collectively.
He called for society to move away from the mindset that the first child must be a boy. As parents, he said, we should instill values and good morals in our children. We should take pride in seeing our daughters become empowered women who can successfully manage both family and business.
Shivakumar remarked that in Indian culture, women are considered the “eyes of the family,” and he appreciated the financial challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in running their ventures. He assured that the government would fully support women entrepreneurs willing to take on societal responsibilities.
