Tehran, September 3: The ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States shows no signs of abating. Recent US airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals and left 108 others injured, according to a statement from Iran’s Health Minister Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi on the Iranian president’s office website.
In a separate statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US attacks, asserting that Iran is committed to firmly responding to protect its freedom, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The Foreign Ministry accused the US government of violating Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity once again on Tuesday night. The statement indicated that numerous civilian areas and infrastructure linked to public services were targeted, leading to casualties and damage to both government and private properties.
On Wednesday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on social media that its forces successfully completed a series of attacks on Iranian military installations. This action was in response to attempts by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US troops stationed in the region.
In retaliation, Iran claimed to have targeted US bases and resources located in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.
The IRGC stated that it successfully struck the residence and command post of US commanders at the Ali Al-Salem base in Kuwait. According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the IRGC emphasized that this operation is part of its ongoing campaign against the Ali Al-Salem base, demonstrating its awareness of US activities in the region.
As reported by Iran’s official news agency IRNA, the IRGC claimed to have launched ballistic missiles at the US Marine base Camp Titan near the Gulf of Aqaba in Jordan. This attack was said to be a response to a US strike on a wedding ceremony in Sirik, which allegedly resulted in the destruction of several military facilities and helicopters, inflicting heavy losses on US forces.
The IRGC also claimed to have destroyed the surveillance balloon control system at a US military base in Erbil, Iraq. According to IRNA, the IRGC’s ground forces attacked US positions in Erbil, destroying a maintenance center and warehouses for technical equipment.
The organization asserted that this assault resulted in the deaths of several US personnel and ignited fuel storage facilities. Iran has vowed to continue responding to US attacks, amid growing international concern over escalating tensions between the two nations.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the overnight military actions and retaliatory strikes between the US and Iran. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, stated on Wednesday that Guterres is particularly troubled by reports of civilian casualties, especially from the strike that reportedly targeted a wedding in Iran.
Dujarric emphasized that the Secretary-General condemns all attacks on civilians and reminded all parties to adhere to their responsibilities under international humanitarian law. This includes distinguishing between civilian and military targets, maintaining proportionality in actions, and taking precautions to protect civilians from harm.
The Secretary-General once again calls for an immediate halt to military actions and urges all parties to exercise restraint and avoid steps and statements that could further escalate the already heightened tensions.
