Severe Weather in Andhra Pradesh Claims Four Lives Amidst Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Amaravati, May 29: Severe weather conditions in parts of Andhra Pradesh late Thursday night caused significant destruction, resulting in the deaths of four individuals in various incidents.

In a tragic event in Krishna district’s Kummaripalem, two young men riding a motorcycle were killed when a tree fell on them. The victims have been identified as Manohar and Shivaram Krishna.

Additionally, a home guard and a student lost their lives due to electric shocks in separate incidents. A student named Anita, who was in her intermediate studies, died after coming into contact with a live wire while fetching drinking water in the village of Lankapalli, located in the Pamidimukkala mandal. The wire had snapped due to strong winds the previous night.

In Vijayawada, NTR district, a home guard also died after being electrocuted by a fallen power line.

The strong winds uprooted trees and electric poles in several affected areas, causing hoardings to collapse. In some locations, fallen trees obstructed traffic, disrupting vehicle movement.

Heavy rainfall in Machilipatnam, Krishna district, led to waterlogging on roads, further hindering transportation.

At the ‘Raitu Seva Kendra’ in East Godavari district, lightning struck, igniting empty sacks stored for farmers. Fire department personnel quickly arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames.

Power supply was disrupted in several areas across Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Bapatla, Palnadu, East Godavari, West Godavari, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and Kadapa districts.

Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar stated that the heavy rain and strong winds had caused power outages in some regions. He instructed officials to restore electricity by Friday afternoon, noting that restoration efforts were hampered by the adverse weather.

Officials informed the minister that power supply had been restored in most affected areas of both Godavari districts. They urged residents to take necessary precautions to avoid electric shock incidents.

The minister expressed condolences over the death of the home guard due to electrocution from a fallen wire and assured the family of the deceased of all possible assistance.

Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority indicated that there is a possibility of sporadic rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in East Godavari, Kakinada, Guntur, Bapatla, and Tirupati districts.

According to Prakhar Jain, Managing Director of the State Disaster Management Authority, winds are expected to reach speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. He advised the public to remain vigilant and avoid standing under trees, electric poles, or hoardings.
