Nepal Flood Tragedy: DNA Testing and Autopsy Required Before Releasing Bodies to Families

New Delhi, September 1: The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued an update regarding the remains of victims affected by the devastating floods in Nepal. This announcement follows a press release from August 29. According to Nepali authorities, several formal procedures must be completed before the bodies of foreign nationals can be handed over, including documentation, autopsy, forensic examination, and identification verification.

The embassy stated that the Nepalese government has outlined the following steps that need to be taken before the remains of foreign nationals can be returned to their families or relevant authorities.

This process involves preparing all necessary documents related to the remains, recording images/details of the bodies, conducting autopsies, verifying the cause of death, formally establishing identity, collecting fingerprints/DNA/forensic samples, verifying the deceased’s passport/ID, completing coordination with the embassy/consulate, and processing the necessary documents and receipts related to the handover of the remains.

Additionally, if relatives and family members can identify the deceased through photos and details available on the Nepal Police website, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu will assist in coordinating with local authorities for the handover and return of the bodies. To mitigate health risks, the Nepalese government has temporarily buried a large number of bodies. Identification of these remains will require DNA matching with close relatives (first-degree relatives).

Authorities have indicated that in cases where identification is not possible or where bodies have been temporarily buried, the Nepalese government will facilitate DNA matching. Officials in Nepal are collecting DNA samples from the bodies to create DNA profiles. Close relatives of the deceased can send profiles via email or provide blood samples along with some preliminary information requested by Nepali authorities.
