Chandrapur, September 1: A disturbing incident has emerged from Chandrapur district in Maharashtra, where a 27-year-old married woman was allegedly raped under the pretext of treating her husband’s supposed ‘planetary afflictions.’ The police have arrested three individuals, including the main accused who claimed to be a ‘Maharaj.’
According to Additional Superintendent of Police Ishwar Katakde, the incident occurred in the Bhisi police jurisdiction of Chimur tehsil. The victim’s husband had been suffering from recurring illnesses. The family was informed that these issues were due to ‘grah dosh’ (planetary afflictions), prompting them to seek help from Shubham Latare Khangar.
The police report states that Shubham Khangar presented himself as a Maharaj associated with the Jagannath Maharaj Bhadra Bhesha temple. On August 30, he arrived at the victim’s home with two accomplices, Sachin Modak and Tejas Wakate, to perform a ritual.
During the ritual, it is alleged that Shubham sent the victim’s husband outside under the pretext of fetching ritual items. Once the husband was out, he reportedly raped the woman while she was alone.
Upon receiving the victim’s complaint, the Bhisi police acted swiftly, arresting the main accused, Shubham Latare Khangar (26), along with his accomplices Sachin Modak and Tejas Wakate.
The police have filed charges against the three under sections 64(1), 351(3), and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The investigation is being led by Bhisi Police Station Officer Mangesh Bhogle.
Currently, all three accused remain in police custody. This incident has once again raised serious questions about the exploitation of individuals in the name of superstition and religious beliefs.
