Chandigarh, 29 August (Kiran News). Seven districts of Punjab are already reeling under severe floods, and the administration has sounded an alert in three more districts. In response to the worsening situation, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann convened an emergency meeting in Chandigarh on Friday. Due to the ongoing flood crisis, the Punjab government has cancelled all staff leaves. The number of staff at district-level control rooms has also been increased.

On Friday morning, opening of the floodgates at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh led to a rise in the water level of the Ghaggar river. Water is also being released into the Sutlej from four gates of the Bhakra Dam. Since morning, army personnel have been rescuing people trapped in flood-affected border districts using helicopters, and ration is being supplied by drones. The Meteorological Department in Chandigarh has issued a red alert for rain in Mohali, Nawanshahr, and Hoshiarpur districts, while Pathankot is on yellow alert. Due to water being released from dams, seven districts in Punjab have been flooded for the past three days. Over 250 villages are under 5 to 15 feet of water. In Gurdaspur, drones have been used to deliver relief material to flood-affected areas. In Ajnala, Amritsar, relief supplies were initially attempted to be delivered by tractor; when that failed, villagers carried the supplies on their shoulders.
Residents of nine villages in Derabassi sub-division of Mohali have been advised to remain on alert, as the water level of the Ghaggar river has crossed 70,000 cusecs. Late-night rainfall also caused waterlogging in many areas of Phase-11 in Mohali, flooding homes and making life difficult for residents. Due to heavy rain in the catchment area of the Ghaggar river and the opening of Sukhna Lake’s gates, people living in villages along the Derabassi sub-division have been warned to remain cautious. Rising water levels also led to water flowing over a bridge near Zirakpur Baltana police post, prompting the administration to close the bridge for traffic from Friday morning.
