New Delhi, April 5: In a significant step towards India’s first fully digital census, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s principal secretary, PK Mishra, completed his self-enumeration for the first phase of the 2027 Census (household listing and housing census) on Saturday.
This achievement was announced through the official handle of the Census of India, which expressed gratitude for Mishra’s active participation and collaboration in this vital national task.
His timely action is viewed as a strong message from the administration, encouraging citizens to engage in the process. The first phase of the 2027 Census commenced on April 1, 2026. For the first time in the history of Indian census operations, the government has introduced a convenient ‘digital self-enumeration’ feature.
This allows citizens to submit their household details online before census officials verify their homes. The self-enumeration portal is currently open in phases across various states, including Jammu and Kashmir.
In the initial phase, it covers eight states, including Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Sikkim, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and parts of Delhi. A 15-day self-enumeration period has been set before a 30-day door-to-door survey in each region.
By completing self-enumeration, residents contribute directly to preparing accurate and reliable data on housing conditions, household amenities, and properties. This information forms the basis for effective planning, inclusive development programs, and evidence-based governance. Officials have emphasized that the digital option makes the process faster, more transparent, and accessible to a larger number of people.
The portal is available in multiple languages and employs secure authentication through mobile numbers. Census officials have urged all eligible citizens to log in to the portal and complete their self-enumeration as soon as possible.
