New Delhi, April 8: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the crucial role of artificial intelligence (AI) in railway safety, stating, “The camera systems will serve as the eyes, and AI will act as the brain.” He highlighted that this technological shift is proving revolutionary in strengthening railway security.
Significant improvements have also been made in passenger services. The Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS) has been expanded to include electronic train indicator boards, coach guidance systems, and public address systems. IPIS is now linked with the National Train Inquiry System (NTES), providing real-time information and announcements related to trains at stations. This service has already been implemented at 1,405 railway stations.
To enhance communication, tunnel communication systems have been introduced across various railway zones. This system has proven particularly vital in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, enabling seamless communication between workers inside tunnels and the control center, thereby improving safety and coordination in challenging terrains.
The railway’s telecom infrastructure has also been modernized. A high-capacity network is being developed using Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) technology, which will meet current and future needs. This upgrade will support services such as video surveillance, Mobile Train Radio Communication (MTRC), Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), Freight Operations Information System (FOIS), SCADA, and video conferencing.
So far, IP/MPLS technology has been successfully implemented at 1,396 railway stations, marking a significant step towards a digitally integrated railway network.
These initiatives clearly demonstrate that Indian Railways is committed to developing a safe, smart, and more efficient rail network through cutting-edge technology and innovation. Additionally, the expansion of telecom infrastructure, AI-based systems, and improved passenger information services are reinforcing the vision of ‘Digital India.’
