New Delhi: The path is nearly clear for Scotland to take Bangladesh’s place in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. While the official written confirmation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) is still awaited, it is expected that Scotland’s entry will be confirmed as soon as the ICC announcement is made.
According to reports, after waiting until the final stages for clarity from Bangladesh, the ICC is now prepared to move swiftly to include Scotland in the tournament. The ICC board has already voted on this issue, leaving little room for any last-minute changes or emotional reversals.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam had mentioned the possibility of a ‘last-minute miracle,’ but the situation has progressed beyond any realistic hopes for a positive turnaround.
ICC’s Deadline and Bangladesh’s Decision
The ICC had given the Bangladesh Cricket Board a deadline of January 21 to provide a clear and final decision on whether their team would participate in the World Cup in India. Earlier, the ICC rejected Bangladesh’s request to shift their match from India to Sri Lanka. During the ICC board meeting, no other country except Pakistan supported Bangladesh’s preference to skip India as the host.
Following the meeting, Bangladesh was given 24 hours to decide. It was made clear that if Bangladesh chose not to travel to India for the World Cup, Scotland would be invited to participate in their place.
Bangladesh Government Advises Against Participation
On Thursday, acting on advice from the Bangladesh government, the BCB decided not to send the Bangladesh cricket team to India for the World Cup. Asif Nazrul, the government’s sports advisor, stated, “The decision not to play in India was taken by the government. The assurances received from the ICC were not sufficient as the board does not represent the country.”
Nazrul also referred to a past incident where a Bangladeshi player was not adequately protected despite security assurances, influencing the government’s decision.
Scotland’s Entry Confirmed, Bangladesh’s Hopes Dim
With Bangladesh opting out of the tournament, Scotland’s entry into the T20 World Cup 2026 is now certain, pending the ICC’s formal announcement. The hopes for a last-minute turnaround from Bangladesh appear to be unrealistic.
