Scotland Set to Replace Bangladesh in 2026 T20 World Cup

New Delhi: The path is nearly clear for Scotland to enter the 2026 T20 World Cup, replacing Bangladesh. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to issue an official written statement, but once released, Scotland’s participation will be confirmed.

According to reports, after waiting until the final stages for clarity from Bangladesh, the ICC is now ready to move swiftly to include Scotland in the tournament. The ICC board has already voted on the matter, leaving little room for any emotional reversal.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam had spoken about the possibility of an “last-minute miracle,” but the situation has moved beyond the point where such optimism can be considered a viable strategy.

The ICC had given Bangladesh until January 21 to make a clear and final decision on whether their team would travel to India for the World Cup. Earlier, the ICC had rejected Bangladesh’s request to shift their matches from India to Sri Lanka. In a board meeting, no country apart from Pakistan supported Bangladesh’s stance against playing in India.

After the meeting, Bangladesh was given 24 hours to decide. They were informed that if they chose not to participate in India, Scotland would take their place in the World Cup.

Following advice from the Bangladesh government, the BCB decided on Thursday not to send the team to India for the tournament. Bangladesh government sports advisor Asif Nazrul said, “The decision not to play in India was taken by the government. The assurances from the ICC were not sufficient because the board does not belong to the country.”

Nazrul also referred to a past incident where, despite Bangladesh’s security expectations, a player was not adequately protected.

With Bangladesh withdrawing, Scotland’s entry into this global event is now certain, pending the ICC’s formal announcement. The hopes for a last-minute miracle from Bangladesh appear unfounded.
