New Delhi: Scotland has been officially included in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, replacing Bangladesh, which has been withdrawn from the tournament. The International Cricket Council (ICC) made this decision following Bangladesh’s refusal to send its players to India due to security concerns amid ongoing communal violence in Bangladesh.
Scotland’s Gratitude to ICC
Cricket Scotland expressed its gratitude to the ICC for the unexpected opportunity to participate in the World Cup. Trudi Lindblade, CEO of Cricket Scotland, said, “I received a letter from the ICC asking if our men’s team could play in the T20 World Cup, and we accepted the proposal.”
Wilf Walsh, Chairman of Cricket Scotland, shared that he received a confirmation call from ICC President Jay Shah. “On behalf of our team, I am happy to accept this opportunity. We thank the ICC for this offer and look forward to competing on the global stage,” he added. Walsh emphasised that this is a golden chance for Scottish players to perform in front of millions of supporters worldwide. The team is preparing to travel to India soon to acclimatise and contribute to the tournament.
Bangladesh’s Withdrawal and ICC’s Response
Bangladesh’s withdrawal followed the controversy over the exclusion of their left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026. After protests related to the communal violence in Bangladesh, the BCCI ordered Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Rahman from their squad. Subsequently, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) refused to send its players to India for the World Cup matches, citing security concerns and requested shifting their matches to Sri Lanka along with a change in their group.
ICC rejected Bangladesh’s demands and instructed them to participate in India, assuring player safety. However, Bangladesh did not comply, officially boycotting the T20 World Cup. Following this refusal, ICC granted Scotland the spot in Group C, previously allocated to Bangladesh.
Looking Ahead to the Tournament
Scotland’s inclusion brings fresh excitement to the World Cup as they prepare to face strong competition. The team is motivated to deliver their best performance on cricket’s biggest stage amid challenging circumstances. Meanwhile, the ICC continues to focus on ensuring a safe and competitive tournament in India.
