Sanju Samson Reflects on Missed Century After Leading CSK to Victory

New Delhi, May 6: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) triumphed over Delhi Capitals (DC) by 8 wickets in a match held at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson was once again the hero of the match, scoring an unbeaten 87 runs off 52 balls, helping his team maintain their playoff hopes. For his outstanding performance, Samson was named Player of the Match.

After the game, Samson expressed his disappointment at missing out on a century, shared his thoughts on being affectionately called ‘Chetta’ by fans, and reflected on the match.

Samson remarked, “Fans are calling me Chetta, but I prefer the name Sanju.”

Following a slow start, he finished the match explosively, stating, “I think we try to figure out what works best for us and stick to the basics. Trusting yourself is crucial in this format. I’ve been working on that for the past two to three months. I’m focusing on my initial movements, and it’s really paying off.”

When asked about his calm demeanor at the crease, Samson said, “I’ve always been this way. Nowadays, I’m spending more time at the crease, so everyone is noticing. Even when I’m sitting outside, I remain very calm.”

Discussing his approach to chasing targets, he explained, “Considering the target we were chasing and how the wicket was behaving, if we had lost just one wicket for 30-35 runs, we could have easily achieved the target. I know my game plan very well. I thought if I took a little extra time during the powerplay, I could capitalize on my shots in the middle overs. That was the plan, and sometimes it works well.”

When questioned if his 87-run innings was better than a century, Samson replied, “Centuries are always special. I need to be a bit selfish to reach a century. I thought, let’s win the match. My partner was batting well, so I didn’t want to ask him for singles just to get to a hundred. I believe finishing the match unbeaten is more satisfying. Let’s see if I can score a century in the upcoming matches.”

Having already scored two centuries this season, Samson’s impressive innings included 6 sixes and 7 fours, leading CSK to a total of 159 runs in 17.3 overs, chasing down DC’s score of 156.
