Sanjay Suri: A Journey from Modeling to Film Production Amidst Challenges

Mumbai, April 6: Sanjay Suri’s story is one of struggle and determination, emerging from Kashmir to make a mark in the film industry. As he celebrates his 55th birthday today, his journey reflects not only on-screen roles but also real-life challenges.

Born into a Kashmiri Pandit family, Suri faced hardships early on, losing his father to terrorism. This tragedy forced his family to leave Kashmir and relocate to Delhi.

Initially, Suri had no aspirations to enter the film industry; he aimed for a career in sports. Before stepping into modeling, he was a well-known squash player. However, fate had other plans for him.

Suri ventured into modeling and quickly gained recognition, particularly for a popular advertisement for Nirma soap alongside Riya Sen. This exposure led him to his film debut in “Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi,” featuring Rinki Khanna and Dino Morea. Although the film did not succeed, it opened doors for him in supporting roles in various films like “Daman,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Dil Vil Pyar Vyar,” and “Pinjar.” His breakthrough came in 2003 with “Jhankar Beats,” where he portrayed a serious character.

In 2005, his film “My Brother… Nikhil” sparked important discussions about HIV and LGBTQ rights in India, addressing topics that were often overlooked. Despite his impactful performances, Suri’s career trajectory remained average, and he did not receive the recognition he deserved.

Transitioning from acting, he began producing films, with his first project “I Am” winning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. He also produced “Chauranga” and is currently active in the OTT space, running his own production house, Antique Clock Films.

Suri’s journey is a testament to resilience and the pursuit of passion, showcasing how one can rise above adversity.
