New Delhi, March 17: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has hailed India’s current team as the greatest white-ball squad in history. India clinched the T20 World Cup title for the second consecutive time by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This victory made India the first team in the world to win back-to-back T20 World Cups.
Ponting noted that India’s winning streak in ICC events, including the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025, continued until it was halted by South Africa in the 2026 T20 World Cup. He emphasized the remarkable consistency of the team, stating that no other team in the current era has matched it.
During the ‘ICC Review Show,’ Ponting remarked, “It’s truly hard to argue against this. If you look at not just the T20 international team, but also the Indian team’s white-ball record in ICC events over the past five to six years, it has been outstanding. Many recognized the depth and strength of the current Indian team even before this tournament began. They possess immense experience, making them a strong white-ball team. I salute them for winning two World Cups in a row.”
According to Ponting, the current Indian team boasts significant experience. “One aspect that often goes unnoticed is the vast experience many players have, whether in international cricket or the IPL. Matches in the Indian Premier League are as significant as international contests, so this Indian team came well-prepared with excellent balance and a strong squad.”
Ponting also mentioned that the loss to South Africa came at an opportune moment. He believes this defeat reinforced India’s resolve. “When you win 12 matches in a row, there comes a day when you don’t perform well. I’m glad it happened early. Perhaps India needed a jolt like this. It allowed them to regroup, sit together, and discuss what matters most as a team. They had solidified their strongest playing eleven and made minimal changes as the tournament progressed.”
