
Glasgow, July 28: In a thrilling night at the Commonwealth Games 2026, India added four more medals to its tally. The nation secured a gold and a bronze in the women’s shot put F57 event, along with two silver medals in high jump and men’s 79 kg weightlifting. With a total of 10 medals (2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze), India currently stands in eighth place in the medal rankings.
Indian para-athlete Sharmila delivered an outstanding performance in the women’s shot put F57 final, achieving a best throw of 9.81 meters to clinch the gold. Her six attempts included distances of 9.48, 9.58, 9.81, 9.17, 9.37, and 9.60 meters, with the 9.81 meters marking her season’s best.
Ghana’s Jinabu Isah secured the silver medal with a best throw of 8.65 meters, recording distances of 8.65, 8.37, 8.60, 7.98, 8.24, and 8.09 meters, also a season best. India’s Shilpa Kanchugarkoppal Shaila earned the bronze with a best throw of 7.26 meters, having attempts of 6.69, 6.95, 7.26, 6.91, and 7.09 meters, while her sixth attempt was invalid. The 7.26 meters marked her personal best.
In the men’s high jump, Indian athlete Sarvesh Anil Kushare captured the silver medal with a leap of 2.25 meters. He narrowly missed the gold, finishing just behind Jamaica’s Romane Beckford. Both athletes cleared 2.25 meters, but the decision was made based on the number of attempts, giving the edge to Beckford. England’s Kimani Jack took third place with a jump of 2.20 meters, while India’s Aadarsh Ram Jyoti Shankar finished fifth with a height of 2.15 meters.
In the men’s 79 kg weightlifting event, India’s Valluri Ajay Babu claimed the silver medal. He lifted a total of 330 kg (149 kg in snatch, a game record, and 181 kg in clean and jerk). Malaysia’s Eri Hidayat Muhammad topped the event with a total of 331 kg (game record), lifting 147 kg in snatch and 184 kg in clean and jerk. England’s Chris Murray secured the bronze medal with a total of 325 kg (148 kg in snatch and 177 kg in clean and jerk).
