Romania Expels Russian Diplomat Amid Drone Incursions

Bucharest, July 28: Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that a member of the Russian embassy in Bucharest has been ordered to leave the country. The individual has been declared an “undesirable person” and must exit Romania within five days.

Under the directive of Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Toiu, the Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to its headquarters.

The ministry stated on the social media platform X that this action was taken in response to repeated violations of Romanian airspace between July 24 and 26, 2026. During this period, Romanian armed forces shot down three drones that had entered the country without permission. An official investigation confirmed that the wreckage of the destroyed drones was of Russian origin. The Russian ambassador was shown parts of these drones during the meeting.

Romania expressed strong opposition to these incidents, labeling them as “illegal and irresponsible” actions. The ministry emphasized that Russia is clearly responsible for these violations.

The ministry further stated that Russia’s continuous infringement of Romanian airspace is entirely unacceptable. It reminded that Romania’s airspace is also part of NATO and the European Union (EU). Romania holds Russia fully accountable for these serious incidents and the deteriorating security situation in the region.

Additionally, Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recalled its ambassador from Russia for consultations.

The ministry indicated that Romania will coordinate with its NATO and EU allies to determine further actions. It affirmed its commitment to taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the country and its citizens.

Earlier in May, a maritime drone exploded at Romania’s Constanța port, although no injuries were reported. In another incident, a drone fell on a residential building’s roof in Galați, causing a fire.

Following that incident, Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă decided to close the Russian consulate in Constanța and declared its consul an undesirable person. This decision came after a meeting of the country’s Supreme Defense Council, which discussed the implications of the drone incident in Galați.
