New Delhi: Former Australia captain Steve Smith has not been named in the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. However, Smith’s outstanding performance in the Big Bash League (BBL) has sparked strong discussions about his potential inclusion if any player suffers an injury during the tournament. Cricket Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has also hinted at this possibility. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has voiced his support for Smith’s inclusion as well.
In six matches of the BBL, Smith scored 299 runs at an impressive strike rate of 167, including a century off just 41 balls. Among players who scored at least 250 runs in the tournament, only Finn Allen had a higher strike rate, and only David Warner had a better batting average. Smith’s contributions played a key role in helping Sydney Sixers reach the final, although they were ultimately defeated by Perth Scorchers.
Due to this form, Smith is considered the top candidate for a possible call-up during the World Cup if an Australian player gets injured. He also has extensive experience playing in the subcontinent. Ricky Ponting has backed Smith to be included in the top order if needed, especially in place of Mitchell Marsh.
Speaking to The Western Australian, Ponting said, “Smith’s position is better than any other player’s, but it is difficult to drop either Travis Head or Mitchell Marsh from the opening slot.”
The former captain added, “Steve has been used as an opening batsman in T20s, though he has been somewhat overlooked in selection over the past few years. An injury to any player could open the door for him.”
Smith has not played a T20 match for Australia since February 2024. In his career, he has played 67 T20 internationals in 55 innings, scoring 1,094 runs, including five half-centuries.
