Rajasthan Launches HPV Vaccination Campaign to Combat Cervical Cancer

Jaipur, March 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a nationwide HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination campaign from Ajmer on Saturday. This initiative is seen as a significant effort to protect women from cervical cancer.

Under this campaign, eligible adolescent girls will receive the HPV vaccine, which is expected to substantially reduce the risk of cervical cancer in the future.

On the first day, a total of 188 vaccination sessions were held across Rajasthan.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma urged parents to enroll their daughters in this vital public health initiative, describing it as a decisive step towards women’s health empowerment and a cervical cancer-free future.

Health and Medical Minister Gajendra Singh Khivsar stated that, according to the guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the vaccine will be administered in a single dose to girls who have completed 14 years but are not yet 15. He highlighted that cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India, prompting the state to develop a comprehensive vaccination strategy to combat it.

Chief Secretary (Health) Gayatri Rathore mentioned that over 832,000 girls are eligible for vaccination under this campaign. The quadrivalent vaccine Gardasil-4 will be administered intramuscularly in a 0.5-milliliter dose in the left upper arm.

A total of 1,000 health institutions across all districts have been designated for this vaccination effort.

Dr. Amit Yadav, Mission Director of the National Health Mission, noted that only those health institutions equipped with a functional cold chain point, designated medical officers, and internet connectivity have been selected for the campaign.

Each vaccination site will have a dedicated team of vaccination personnel, verifiers, awareness coordinators, and volunteers.

Training for ASHA workers, verifiers, and awareness teams has been fully completed at the state, district, and institutional levels to ensure smooth implementation of the campaign.

The state health department has described this initiative as a historic public health effort aimed at safeguarding adolescent girls and strengthening the preventive health infrastructure in Rajasthan.
