Jaipur, 2 January: Severe cold wave continues in Jaipur and other parts of Rajasthan, prompting the district collector to announce holidays at Anganwadi centres from 2 January to 10 January.
According to Radheshyam Sharma, Director of the Meteorological Centre, the cold is expected to intensify from Sunday onwards. Night temperatures in some areas of Rajasthan may drop to around 4 degrees Celsius.
He stated that a cold wave will sweep across the state, causing minimum temperatures to fall by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius in many regions. Due to the harsh cold, Anganwadi centres in Shri Ganganagar have been closed until 10 January.
On Thursday, minimum temperatures in most cities remained above 10 degrees Celsius, with Sirohi recording the lowest at 7.2 degrees Celsius. Many cities experienced nearly similar temperatures during day and night.
Shri Ganganagar recorded the lowest maximum temperature this season, while Jaipur, Alwar, Bikaner, and Churu saw maximum temperatures stay below 20 degrees Celsius.
Clouds lingered over Jaipur, Sikar, and several other districts, increasing the chill. Late Thursday evening, dense fog began to settle in northern districts, causing difficulties due to the combined effects of cold and fog since the start of the new year.
On Friday morning, visibility dropped to about 50 metres in Jaipur, Bharatpur, Sikar, Dausa, and several other districts due to dense fog.
Flight operations in Jaisalmer and Udaipur are likely to be affected. Indigo Airlines has issued an advisory for passengers travelling to and from these cities.
The Meteorological Department has urged people to remain cautious over the next few days as the cold wave and fog are expected to persist, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the state.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder was recorded in parts of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Ajmer, Jaipur, and Bharatpur divisions, influenced by a western disturbance. The highest rainfall was 26 mm in Dungargarh, Bikaner district.
Light rain was also observed on Thursday in some areas of Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions. This winter rain has brought relief and happiness to farmers, as agricultural experts note it is beneficial for standing Rabi crops.
The weather department has issued a double alert for Friday.
An orange alert for very dense fog has been declared for several districts including Bharatpur, Dausa, Deeg, Dholpur, Jhunjhunu, Karauli, Khairthal-Tijara, Kotputli-Behror, Sawai Madhopur, Sikar, Churu, Hanumangarh, and Shri Ganganagar.
