Chennai, February 24: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted moderate rainfall in parts of southern Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats until March 1. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.

According to an official press release from the weather department, a low-pressure area formed over the southwestern Bay of Bengal and adjacent central regions on the morning of February 23. This system is expected to gradually weaken as it moves northeast.

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation in the southeastern Arabian Sea near the southern Kerala coast may influence weather activities in the surrounding areas. The combined effect of these systems is likely to bring moderate rainfall to one or two locations in southern Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats districts, and nearby areas from February 24 to March 1.

The department also released rainfall data recorded over the past 24 hours, highlighting that the highest rainfall in Tamil Nadu was recorded in Shankarankovil, Tenkasi district, with 40 mm. Other areas, including Perunchani dam, Shivlogam, Kuzhithurai, Surulakod, and Puthen dam in Kanyakumari district, also experienced significant rainfall, each receiving 30 mm.

In Thoothukudi district, areas such as Kayathar, Palamoor in Kanyakumari, Tirupatysaram, Chittar, and parts of Thoothukudi city, as well as Madurai district, may receive around 20 mm of rain.

Fishermen are urged to exercise caution as stormy weather conditions are expected in the northern parts of the southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjacent southwestern, central, and east-central regions. The weather department has warned that wind speeds in these areas could reach up to 60 km/h.

Authorities have advised fishermen to refrain from entering specified marine areas during this period due to adverse weather conditions. They will continue to monitor these systems closely and will issue further information as necessary.

Given the likelihood of intermittent rainfall in several areas over the coming days, residents of southern districts are advised to remain vigilant and follow official guidelines.
