Guwahati, July 24: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued an advisory on Friday, urging residents to avoid the Dikhow River in Sivasagar district. Despite a decrease in water levels, they remain dangerously high.
Officials reported that the warning was prompted by the Central Water Commission (CWC), which indicated that the flood situation in the Dikhow River remained critical as of Friday morning.
According to the CWC, the river’s water level was recorded at 94.26 meters at 9 AM, exceeding the danger mark of 92.40 meters by 1.86 meters. Although the water level is beginning to decline, it still falls within the severe flood category, necessitating caution among locals.
In the interest of public safety, ASDMA advised, “Due to the continuous rise in the water level of the Dikhow River in Sivasagar district, citizens are advised to stay away from the river.”
This warning will be in effect from 9 AM to 6 PM on Friday, with district administration and disaster management officials closely monitoring the situation.
The CWC also noted that while the current water level is 0.09 meters below the highest recorded flood level of 94.35 meters on July 2, 2024, it still poses a significant threat to low-lying areas along the riverbank.
Officials have appealed to residents in at-risk areas to refrain from fishing, bathing, or engaging in any activities near the river until the flood situation improves.
Emergency response teams and district administration are vigilantly observing the river’s status. Should water levels rise again or if new rainfall exacerbates the situation, they are prepared to take necessary actions.
Residents are also urged to follow official guidance, avoid spreading rumors, and report any flood-related emergencies immediately to local authorities or disaster management officials.
