New Delhi, July 23: Dr. Eskandar Momeni, the Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday evening to participate in the BRICS Home Ministers’ meeting. He will address the topic of Disaster Risk Reduction (DDR) at the ministerial meeting scheduled for Friday.
Under India’s BRICS presidency in 2026, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is organizing the DDR ministerial meeting on July 24 in New Delhi.
The Iranian Embassy in India announced on the social media platform ‘X’ that Dr. Momeni was welcomed by the Director General of the Ministry of Home Affairs upon his arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
During his visit, Dr. Momeni will not only attend the BRICS Home Ministers’ meeting but will also engage in bilateral discussions with several other ministers from BRICS nations. Topics for these discussions will include internal security, counter-terrorism, organized crime prevention, disaster management, law enforcement, and border security collaboration.
According to the embassy, the aim of the BRICS Home Ministers’ meeting is to strengthen security cooperation among member countries, enhance coordination in addressing shared threats, and promote collaborative efforts.
The meeting will be chaired by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai. It is considered a significant step towards developing BRICS cooperation on disaster risk reduction. This underscores the recognition that natural and other disasters significantly impact sustainable development, climate preparedness, economic stability, and public safety.
Ministers and heads of delegations from the ten BRICS member countries are participating in this meeting, demonstrating their commitment to disaster risk reduction.
Cooperation on disaster risk reduction among BRICS nations began with the Udaipur Declaration in 2016, which called for the establishment of a joint task force for disaster management. The Kazan Declaration in 2024 formalized the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Group (DRRG) and approved the BRICS DRR Action Plan for 2025-2028.
This ministerial meeting, themed “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development,” concludes a year of technical discussions and consensus-building among member countries.
A high-level policy dialogue on “Advancing Climate-Smart and Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure Systems: Partnerships, Innovation, and Financing for Resilient Development” will also be held during the meeting.
