Rain Forces Cancellation of Sri Lanka-Pakistan Second T20 Match

The second T20 match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan scheduled on Friday at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium was called off due to heavy rain. With this, Pakistan maintains a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The final and decisive match of the series is set to take place on 11 January at the same venue.

In the first match played on 7 January at Dambulla, Sri Lanka’s batting struggled significantly. The home team lost wickets in quick succession, eventually being bowled out for 128 runs in just 19.2 overs. Janith Liyanage top-scored for Sri Lanka with 40 runs off 31 balls, including one six and two fours. Vanindu Hasaranga contributed 18 runs to the total.

For Pakistan, Salman Mirza and Abrar Ahmed were the standout bowlers, each taking three wickets. Mohammad Wasim Jr and Shadab Khan picked up two wickets apiece.

Chasing the target, Pakistan secured a comfortable win in 16.4 overs. The opening pair of Sahibzada Farhan and Saif Ayub provided a strong start, putting on 59 runs in 5.5 overs. Sahibzada scored a solid 51 runs off 36 balls with two sixes and four fours, while Saif contributed 24 runs from 18 balls. Shadab Khan remained unbeaten on 18 runs to guide Pakistan to victory. Sri Lanka’s wickets were shared by Theekshana, Chamira, Hasaranga, and Dhananjaya de Silva, each taking one wicket.

The T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin on 7 February, with Pakistan opening their campaign against the Netherlands. Sri Lanka will face Ireland on 8 February. This ongoing T20 series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is crucial for both teams as preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
