Pune, August 13: Rail traffic in Pune, Maharashtra, faced significant disruptions due to an incident involving an express train. The train collided with livestock between Hadapsar and Lonikand, causing delays for several hours. However, repair work continued overnight, and services resumed at 7:35 AM on Thursday after power was restored to the overhead equipment (OHE).
According to reports, the Panvel–Nanded Express (Train 17613) struck livestock on Wednesday night, which caused the train’s pantograph to get stuck in the OHE wires, leading to broken power lines. As a result, the train was halted around 8:16 PM.
In response to the incident, railway authorities quickly initiated relief and restoration efforts. Tower wagons were dispatched from Pune, Lonikand, Daund, and Talegaon to the site. By 9:30 PM, engineering control declared the track fit for operation. Subsequently, a diesel shunting locomotive was coupled to the express train to assist in its removal from the scene.
By 10:25 PM, the train was successfully moved to Lonikand, clearing the affected section. Following this, the MEMU (71413) and another express train (16588) were also dispatched with the help of a diesel locomotive.
To repair the OHE, a traffic and power block was authorized at 12:35 AM on August 13. The repair work was carried out with the assistance of four tower wagons.
This incident affected multiple trains, including the Panvel–Nanded Express (17613), Bikaner–Yashwantpur (16588), MEMU (71413), Mahaanagari Express (22177), and Pune Supaul Express (11401). Additionally, trains such as the Ekta Nagar-MGR Chennai Central Superfast Express (20920), Rajkot-Secunderabad Superfast Express (22717), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)-MGR Chennai Central Express (12163), and Kanyakumari Express (16381) were rerouted.
Meanwhile, railway staff worked tirelessly overnight to complete the OHE restoration. Rail services were fully restored by 7:35 AM.
