Beijing, August 12: Chinese disarmament ambassador Li Chiqiang strongly condemned the United States for its recent allegations regarding ballistic missile launches during a joint statement at the Geneva Disarmament Conference on August 11.
Li emphasized that China’s modernization of its defense capabilities is rational and legitimate. He firmly opposes the misuse of disarmament platforms by a select few countries for political control.
On the same day, during the disarmament conference’s plenary session, the US and other nations accused China of conducting intercontinental ballistic missile tests from the sea in July. Li refuted these claims, shedding light on China’s position.
Li pointed out that China has conducted intercontinental ballistic missile tests only three times, the lowest among the five nuclear-armed nations. In contrast, the United States has conducted the most intercontinental tests globally, investing heavily in nuclear capabilities and emphasizing so-called nuclear sharing and extended deterrence, which pose serious threats to international peace and security.
He reiterated that China consistently follows a path of peaceful development and adheres to a defensive nuclear strategy. China maintains its nuclear arsenal at the minimum level necessary for national security and will not engage in any form of nuclear arms race.
