New Delhi: The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is set to begin on 7 February, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Team India enters the tournament as the defending champions, having won the 2024 edition by defeating South Africa in the final.
Over the past two years, the Indian team has undergone significant changes. Former head coach Rahul Dravid and players like captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja are no longer part of the squad. Under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir and the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India aims to defend its title at this prestigious event. Ahead of the World Cup, Rahul Dravid shared an important message for the team.
Speaking at a private event, Dravid said that India will enter the tournament as favourites and is expected to reach at least the semifinals. However, based on his experience, the outcome will heavily depend on which team performs better on the day. “Even one good innings from the opposition can trouble you. No matter how strong Team India is, one bad day can spoil everything. A single off day can undo all your hard work,” he cautioned.
Dravid’s remarks resonate deeply with every member of the Indian squad and cricket fans alike. In the 2003 ODI World Cup, India played well throughout but lost to Australia in the final. Dravid was the wicketkeeper-batsman in that tournament. Exactly 20 years later, in 2023, a similar scenario unfolded. Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, India remained unbeaten throughout the World Cup but again fell short in the final against Australia, with Dravid serving as head coach. Drawing from these experiences, he emphasised that a single poor performance can shatter hopes and dreams, underscoring the need for constant vigilance.
Currently, Team India is in excellent form in the T20 format. Given the home conditions shared with Sri Lanka and India’s strong recent performances, the team is considered a favourite to win the World Cup. Should India succeed, it would become the first team to win consecutive T20 World Cups and also hold the record for the most T20 World Cup titles, with three championships in total. India had previously won the inaugural T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007.
