Chandigarh, April 14: The Shiromani Akali Dal has leveled serious allegations against the Punjab government regarding the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), a key entity for the state’s water and electricity resources. The party asserts that under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, Punjab’s rights are being compromised. The Punjab Congress president has also criticized the government on this issue.
Bikram Singh Majithia, the general secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal, took to social media platform X to express his concerns, stating, “There has been a gross violation of Punjab’s rights at the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership. This is not only a failure but a clear act of surrender.”
Majithia accused both the Punjab and central governments of collusion. He remarked, “Instead of strengthening Punjab’s position, the state is suffering losses due to alleged collusion with the central government. Following the water issue, Punjab’s share in the BBMB is also decreasing, indicating a clear pattern. Signs of coordination with the central government point towards a weakening of Punjab’s interests.”
He further noted, “Punjab was previously put in a difficult position regarding the SYL issue, and this trend continues. The government remains silent and focuses on advertisements instead of protecting rights. Governance cannot run solely on advertisements. The voice for rights is missing. The Akali Dal will continue to oppose this.”
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has also criticized the government on this matter. He stated, “The amendment to the BBMB recruitment rules is a direct attack on Punjab’s rightful claims. This is not just a policy change but a deliberate attempt to undermine Punjab’s control over its rights and resources. Is this another step towards strengthening the central grip over Punjab?”
Previously, Majithia had alleged that the Punjab government had added an additional burden to the state’s financial situation by taking on a loan of ₹1,500 crores. He claimed that this new debt was incurred at a time when the state was already heavily indebted. Rather than focusing on fiscal discipline or reducing liabilities, the government continues to rely on loans, plunging Punjab deeper into financial crisis. Majithia asserted that the ₹1,500 crores would be used for arranging flights for the Delhi-based Aam Aadmi Party leadership and for government advertisements.
