Political Shift in Tamil Nadu: MDMK Considers Breaking Ties with DMK

Chennai, June 2: A significant shift is brewing in Tamil Nadu‘s political landscape. The MDMK party, led by senior leader Durai Vaiko, is facing increasing demands to sever ties with the DMK coalition and support the ruling TVK government under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. A major political decision from the party is anticipated soon.

In the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, MDMK contested under the DMK-led alliance, securing four assembly seats, including Sirkaazi, Kadayaanallur, Modakkurichi, and Madurai South. MDMK candidates campaigned under the DMK symbol as part of the alliance strategy.

Candidates included Senthil Selvan (Sirkaazi), Rajendran (Kadayaanallur), Senthil Nathan (Modakkurichi), and Bhoominathan (Madurai South). Senthil Selvan and Rajendran emerged victorious, granting MDMK two seats in the assembly.

However, the political climate has shifted rapidly following the formation of the TVK government. Several party leaders and officials are now urging Vaiko to reconsider the party’s political strategy and distance itself from the DMK alliance.

This discussion gained momentum when Durai Vaiko personally welcomed Chief Minister Vijay during his visit to the Tiruchi East assembly constituency on Monday. Vijay was there to express gratitude to voters after vacating his seat following his appointment as Chief Minister.

In a conversation with reporters, Vaiko stated, “Unfortunately, we contested under the DMK symbol. We are a separate political movement. We were supposed to contest under the ‘Rising Sun’ symbol, which is why we could not support TVK.”

His remarks have sparked speculation in political circles that if MDMK chooses an independent political path, its MLAs Senthil Selvan and Rajendran might resign from their assembly memberships.

All eyes are now on the MDMK’s general assembly meeting scheduled for June 27 in Chennai. This meeting is expected to address crucial issues, including the party’s future strategy, its relationship with the DMK, and support for the TVK government.
