Kolkata, August 28: The Calcutta High Court has denied any interim relief to the faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee. This decision came on Thursday in response to a case concerning the freezing of four bank accounts belonging to the party at a government bank branch.
The Mamata faction approached the High Court seeking to lift the debit freeze imposed on these accounts located at the Harish Mukherjee Road branch of the bank. Bank officials had implemented the freeze following directives from the West Bengal police.
In their petition, the faction argued that it was essential to lift the debit freeze to manage the party’s daily expenses, particularly to pay the salaries of its 215 full-time employees.
Additionally, the faction requested a stay on a case registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station under Bidhannagar City Police in North 24 Parganas, which was linked to the police’s directive to freeze the accounts.
The matter was heard by Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, who refused to grant any relief. Instead, he instructed the state government to file an affidavit regarding the issue, after which the Mamata faction would submit its response.
Justice Bhattacharya also stated that the hearing would proceed only after the affidavits were filed, and a decision would be made subsequently. He noted that although the same bench had previously allowed the partial and conditional de-freezing of four TMC accounts in a private sector bank, no such instructions would be issued in this case.
