Chennai, June 2: Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the state secretariat on Tuesday. This meeting has sparked new political speculation regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election from the state.
The meeting comes at a crucial time as political parties are initiating discussions ahead of the by-election to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seat announced by the Election Commission of India.
This seat became vacant after AIADMK leader C.V. Shanmugam resigned from the Rajya Sabha following his election as a member of the Tamil Nadu Assembly from the Mailam constituency.
According to political sources, Congress is eager to secure this seat and is seeking support from the ruling TVK-led coalition. This party has five MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and had supported the TVK government following the assembly elections, making it a key ally in the ruling coalition.
Sources indicate that during his conversation with Chief Minister Vijay, Chidambaram conveyed the views of the Congress leadership. While the details of the meeting have not been officially disclosed, it is believed that the Rajya Sabha by-election was a significant topic of discussion.
The ruling TVK is in a strong position to influence the election results, given its 107 MLAs in the assembly and support from coalition partners. It is expected to play a decisive role in selecting the next Rajya Sabha member from the state.
Political observers suggest that Congress views this vacant seat as an opportunity to strengthen its presence in Parliament and hopes to receive support from the ruling coalition. However, no formal announcement regarding the party’s candidate has been made yet.
Sources have indicated that Chief Minister Vijay will engage in detailed consultations with senior TVK leaders and coalition partners before making a final decision on the candidacy.
It is likely that both political dynamics and coalition considerations will be evaluated before the ruling party clarifies its stance.
