Mumbai, August 27: A political storm has erupted following allegations made by Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar that Supriya Sule, a Member of Parliament from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), possesses an Other Backward Class (OBC) certificate.
In response to these claims, Sule vehemently denied the accusations, demanding that Wadettiwar either substantiate his statement or issue a public apology. After Sule’s firm stance, Wadettiwar clarified that he had mistakenly mentioned her name and expressed regret for the error.
Sule challenged Wadettiwar to disclose the source of his information regarding the reservation status. On the social media platform X, she urged him to reveal who provided this information and on what basis. She stated that if Wadettiwar believes his claim is true, he must present public evidence to support it. Otherwise, he should apologize for making unfounded allegations.
In response to the backlash, Wadettiwar issued a clarification on X, explaining that he had inadvertently mentioned Sule’s name while discussing the OBC certificate issue. He emphasized that he did not intend to accuse her and apologized for the unintentional mistake.
Meanwhile, the controversy has sparked sharp reactions from leaders of both parties. Shashikant Shinde, head of the Maharashtra NCP unit, expressed strong discontent with Wadettiwar’s comments, stating that such behavior from Congress leaders was a significant reason for their downfall in 2014.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve questioned the controversy, asserting that if someone has obtained a certificate within the established legal framework, there should be no issue.
This debate highlights the growing political tensions in Maharashtra and the increasing internal rifts between the Congress and the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar.
