New Delhi, July 20: Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike with the Cockroach People’s Party, has been admitted to the hospital by the police. On the same day, protesters plan to march, but Delhi police have warned that this event is unauthorized. Wangchuk’s wife has stated that he will end his hunger strike if political party leaders meet with him and commit to raising education issues in the parliament.
Geetanjali J. Angmo, Wangchuk’s wife, announced from the stage that if MPs and leaders from various political parties visit him at Safdarjung Hospital on Monday and assure him that they will prioritize accountability in education and educational reforms during the monsoon session, he will break his fast.
Speaking to the media at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, Angmo said, “Sonam will only end his hunger strike if political leaders meet him in the hospital and guarantee that they will address the issue of accountability in education during the parliamentary session.”
She emphasized the importance of the upcoming march, stating, “We want this march to be very successful, as people from across the country are joining. Many political leaders are also participating. Sonam believes that if MPs and other leaders meet him on Monday and assure him that they will make accountability in education and educational reforms a key agenda in this session, he will end his hunger strike.”
Angmo reiterated their goal of ensuring accountability in the education system and raising the issue of educational reforms at a national level.
It is noteworthy that the Cockroach People’s Party has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20, and the Delhi police have stated that they have not granted permission for the proposed march to parliament on July 20.
Delhi’s DCP Sachin Sharma confirmed, “No permission has been granted for the alleged march by the Cockroach People’s Party (CPP) to parliament on July 20.” He added that Section 163 of the BNS is in effect, and protests can only be held at the designated site in Jantar Mantar with prior approval.
He clarified that no application requesting permission for the march has been received by the Delhi police, nor has any permission been granted.
