Northeast India Emerges as a New Gateway for Opportunities and Development

New Delhi, June 20: Over the past 12 years, the development of Northeast India has accelerated significantly due to the continuous efforts of the central government and targeted policy support. Improvements in connectivity, energy, infrastructure, and livelihoods have made the region stronger, more connected, and self-reliant. This information was released in an official fact sheet on Saturday.

According to the report, a special policy framework has been established for the development of the Northeast region over the last decade. The Ministry of Development of the Northeastern Region is providing financial assistance to all eight northeastern states through five central regional schemes.

So far, a total of 3,746 projects have been approved, with 2,730 of them completed, amounting to an approved cost of over ₹27,963 crores.

The government states that continuous investment and policy cooperation have resulted in visible development across nearly every sector. Notably, these development initiatives have been carried out with a focus on environmental protection and the interests of local communities, making the growth not only effective but also long-term and sustainable.

The Prime Minister‘s Development Initiative for the Northeast Region is considered a significant step in this direction. This 100% centrally funded scheme has allocated ₹6,600 crores for the period from 2022-23 to 2025-26. Under this initiative, work is ongoing on 48 projects aimed at improving infrastructure, livelihoods, social development, and addressing developmental deficiencies. Three projects, including the Center of Excellence and Passenger Ropeway System, have already been completed.

Special attention has also been given to strengthening road connectivity in the Northeast. The total length of national highways was 10,905 kilometers in 2014, which is expected to increase to 16,207 kilometers by April 1, 2025.

There has also been significant expansion in the railway network. While 333 kilometers of new railway lines were initiated between 2009 and 2014, this figure has exceeded 1,900 kilometers from 2014 to 2026.

The government’s Act East policy has also given Northeast India a new identity. Implemented in 2014, this policy has positioned Northeast India as a hub of India’s connectivity with Southeast Asian countries, focusing on connectivity, trade, cultural relations, and the development of border areas.

An official statement noted that Northeast India is emerging as a new gateway for opportunities, trade, and international cooperation. Recognized as ‘Ashtalakshmi,’ this region now appears more connected, robust, and prepared for future challenges.
