West Bengal Chief Minister Takes Strong Action on Jadavpur University Controversy

Ahmedabad, August 25: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has expressed serious concern regarding alleged offensive and anti-national graffiti and images found in the boys’ hostel of the Arts Division at Jadavpur University.

He stated that the Chief Minister’s complaint cell received videos and photos from some university students, showcasing images and graffiti that convey objectionable, violent, and purportedly anti-India messages within the hostel premises.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, Adhikari emphasized that educational institutions should be sacred centers of learning, academic excellence, and nation-building. He asserted that under no circumstances should the university campus be allowed to become a platform for distorted propaganda or anti-India sentiments.

The Chief Minister urged the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, the Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department, and other relevant officials to conduct an immediate investigation into the matter. He instructed that a physical verification of the Arts Division boys’ hostel area should be conducted first. If such graffiti and images are discovered, those responsible must be identified.

Adhikari reiterated that the West Bengal government adopts a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards any form of anti-national activities, especially within academic institutions. He directed the relevant departments and university administration to take necessary steps to maintain the dignity of the academic environment. If the investigation confirms the presence of anti-national messages and objectionable images, they should be removed immediately, accountability established for those responsible, and strict administrative and legal actions taken against them.

In his message, the Chief Minister stated that educational institutions in West Bengal should remain centers of talent, discipline, and education, rather than platforms for divisive thoughts and anti-social activities. He expressed hope that the university administration would take this matter seriously and ensure a healthy academic atmosphere on campus.
