New Two-Lane Tube Tunnel to Be Built Parallel to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel in Udhampur

New Delhi, June 9: The Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, has announced a significant infrastructure project for the Udhampur region in Jammu and Kashmir. A proposal has been made to construct a new two-lane tube tunnel parallel to the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel on National Highway-44. Singh described this as a major achievement for regional development and traffic facilitation.

In a post on the social media platform X, Singh expressed gratitude to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for accepting the demand he raised. He stated that this is another positive development for Udhampur, and the new tunnel will help alleviate the increasing traffic pressure on the Chenani-Nashri route in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Union Minister emphasized that National Highway-44 is considered the lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir, with the number of vehicles on this route continuously rising. The construction of the new two-lane tube tunnel parallel to the existing Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel will enhance traffic management. This will provide travelers with a smoother, safer, and faster journey while also boosting economic activities in the region.

He noted that this project will benefit not only local residents but also millions of people traveling between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. Once the new tunnel is completed, traffic pressure will be divided, reducing congestion and travel time.

Singh reminded everyone that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel on April 2, 2017. This tunnel has been a crucial project on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, significantly reducing travel time and ensuring better connectivity in all weather conditions.

He added that the central government is paying special attention to the development of roads, railways, and other infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
