New Delhi, June 22: Keshav Chandra, the President of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), officially designated Sangli Apartments, located on Copernicus Marg, as ‘Anupam Colony’ on Monday. He also unveiled a commemorative plaque. This honor is awarded to communities that excel in waste management and environmental preservation.
‘Anupam Colony’ is a certification provided by NDMC to colonies that meet high standards of zero waste and self-sufficient lifestyles.
According to an official statement, Sangli Apartments has achieved nearly 100 percent waste segregation at the source, with every household actively participating in responsible waste management.
Keshav Chandra emphasized that this initiative is a significant step toward strengthening community-based environmental protection and making New Delhi a clean, green, and sustainable city. He highlighted the enthusiasm, energy, and participation of the residents, noting the presence of Air Commodore and the active involvement of people at all levels.
He further stated that this achievement was made possible due to this collective participation in such a short time.
Previously, NDMC has also granted ‘Anupam Colony’ status to several areas, including Zor Bagh, New Moti Bagh, D-1, D-2, Satya Sadan Officers Flats, Bharti Nagar, Aradhana (Burma Shell Cooperative Housing Society), and Bapu Dham.
Keshav Chandra mentioned that to enhance citizen participation and promote responsible waste disposal, several ‘Anupam Colonies’ have established centers where residents can donate clothes, books, and household items. Additionally, vending machines have been installed to collect plastic waste, providing incentives for returning plastic bottles.
Wet waste generated from homes is converted into compost using organic waste converters, which is then used for maintaining parks and greenery. Meanwhile, eco-friendly briquettes are made from dry leaves and gardening waste, promoting the ‘waste to wealth’ model.
