Asheville, August 31: Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in Asheville, North Carolina, on Sunday to participate in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting. The discussions will focus on global growth, economic imbalances, public debt, and the implications of the Iran conflict.
Upon her arrival at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, she was welcomed by Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s Ambassador to the United States. Sitharaman will lead the Indian delegation at the two-day meeting starting Monday.
The Indian Finance Ministry posted on the social media platform ‘X,’ stating, “Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was welcomed today at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport by Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s Ambassador to the USA.”
The ministry confirmed that Sitharaman will participate in the G20 and related meetings over the next two days in Asheville.
On Sunday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Basant and Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh also arrived in Asheville. According to U.S. officials, both traveled together from Joint Base Andrews.
Basant will host finance ministers and central bank governors from the 19 G20 member countries, the European Union, and the African Union. Representatives from international financial institutions and invited organizations will also attend the meeting.
During its G20 presidency, the U.S. has prioritized economic growth.
After arriving in Asheville, Scott Basant tweeted, “As President Trump works to revitalize the U.S. economy and make it a priority, we are also prioritizing economic growth as this year’s G20 financial track hosts.”
He added, “We want to send a message alongside global policymakers and private sector leaders that strong economic growth is not only possible but necessary.”
The meeting is expected to address promoting economic growth, resolving long-standing global economic imbalances, tackling public debt challenges, and developing more robust supply chains. The economic impacts of the Iran conflict, particularly rising energy prices and disruptions in trade through the Strait of Hormuz, will also be key discussion points.
Reports suggest that the U.S. may seek to garner support for its campaign to limit Iran’s economic relations through this meeting and bilateral talks.
However, reaching a comprehensive consensus document is considered challenging due to differences over issues like sanctions, tariffs, and China’s industrial policies.
Before attending the G20 meeting, Sitharaman participated in several programs focused on investment, innovation, and India’s manufacturing capabilities in Chicago.
During a business roundtable, she invited global companies to establish manufacturing units, technology centers, and innovation hubs in India. She emphasized that companies could use India as a base to serve international markets.
Sitharaman stated, “We are continuously creating a policy environment that facilitates investment, manufacturing, innovation, and expansion for businesses. As global companies reassess their supply chains and capital investment strategies, India offers not just a large market but also a strong platform for long-term investment and operations.”
The Finance Minister also met with senior executives from key companies in agriculture, defense technology, and hospitality.
These meetings included executives like Monish Patolawala, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of ADM, Brandon Seng, Co-founder and Chairman of Shield AI, and Mark S. Hoplamazian, President and CEO of Hyatt.
Sitharaman addressed the Indian community in Chicago, discussing the government’s fiscal reform programs, India’s economic goals, and the country’s approach to bilateral trade and investment agreements.
After her meetings in Asheville, Sitharaman will travel to New York for discussions with investors and companies. This visit is part of her six-day trip to the United States.
The ministerial meeting in Asheville is part of the preparations for the G20 leaders’ summit, which will take place in December in Miami, hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump.
