Ujjain, August 31: On Monday, August 31, the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal was performed at the Mahakaleshwar Temple during the auspicious Bhadrpad Krishna Paksha Tritiya. A large number of devotees gathered to witness this divine event.
Early in the morning, after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, the doors of the temple were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal following the elaborate decoration and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the idol of Lord Mahakal was bathed in Panchamrit, a sacred mixture made from milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. During the worship, the first bell was rung, and Hari Om water was offered. After the camphor Aarti, Baba donned a crown. The Bhasma Aarti was then conducted with the accompaniment of cymbals, drums, and conch shells, while Baba Mahakal was adorned with flowers, dried fruits, and cannabis.
The chief priest of the Mahakal Temple conducted the grand Aarti, allowing numerous devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. Many devotees had queued since the previous night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity. Traditionally, men are required to wear dhoti and women sarees during the Bhasma Aarti.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhada. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal reveals Himself in a tangible form. Devotees from far and wide travel to the holy city of Ujjain to participate in this sacred ritual.
