Mumbai, August 31: In a significant development in the murder case of Haryana singer Ankit Baliyan, Shamli police eliminated two suspected shooters during an encounter on Monday. Two police officers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Authorities reported that before their demise, the suspects named a notorious criminal, Rahul.
The shooters have been identified as Sumit and Mohit, both hailing from Sonipat district in Haryana. Shamli’s Superintendent of Police, Narendra Pratap Singh, confirmed that these two were among the four shooters involved in Baliyan’s murder. He described them as most wanted criminals.
During a press briefing, SP Singh recounted the tragic incident that occurred on August 26, when the popular singer was shot dead near a gym in the Kotwali police station area of Shamli. Following this incident, a high alert was declared across the district.
From midnight to early morning, a blockade and checking operation was underway throughout the area. Around 3:30 AM, two young men arrived in a vehicle with a Baghpat registration number in the industrial area of the Sadar Kotwali. When police attempted to stop them, they opened fire on the officers and fled towards the Kotwali.
SP Singh noted that the police continued their checks and were fired upon, resulting in a shattered vehicle window. The suspects attempted to escape towards the city, but soon took positions and resumed firing at the police team. Senior officials had also arrived at the encounter site by this time.
During the exchange of gunfire, two police officers were critically injured and transported to the hospital. In the police’s retaliatory action, two criminals were severely wounded and later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Authorities recovered two 9mm pistols, a .32 caliber pistol, and 26 cartridges from the shooters. SP Singh revealed that during interrogation, the injured suspects disclosed that they were sent by a notorious criminal from Haryana named Rahul, who had financed the operation and provided them with firearms. They were instructed that on August 26, they would meet Baliyan, and the four shooters arrived via different routes to execute the plan, resulting in Baliyan’s immediate death.
