Maulana Shahabuddin Bareilly on Vande Mataram: A Song of Freedom, Not Imposed

Bareilly, May 25: Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilly responded to Uttar Pradesh Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar’s statement regarding “Vande Mataram.” He emphasized that the song was used during the freedom movement to inspire patriotism and enthusiasm among the people.

In an interview with a news agency, Maulana Shahabuddin highlighted the historical significance of “Vande Mataram,” urging that it should be understood in its proper context. He stressed that no one should be forced to recite the song.

Regarding the issue of teaching “Vande Mataram” in madrasas, he stated that it should not be imposed on anyone. Those who wish to recite it can do so, while those who do not should feel no pressure. He underscored the importance of respecting people’s feelings and freedoms in religious and educational institutions.

He noted that during the freedom struggle, “Vande Mataram” was more than just a song; it served as a source of inspiration for freedom fighters, strengthening the spirit of nationalism and struggle among citizens.

It is noteworthy that there are plans to make the singing of “Vande Mataram” mandatory in madrasas across Uttar Pradesh. Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar made significant claims in a media interview regarding this initiative. He stated that the Minority Welfare Department is prepared to implement such measures in madrasas.

Rajbhar expressed, “Why shouldn’t we implement such arrangements? We want to provide better education, health, and employment opportunities for the children in madrasas. We aim to foster peace, harmony, and brotherhood. What is wrong with that?”

Additionally, Maulana Shahabuddin addressed rumors surrounding Bakrid and the tradition of sacrifice. He affirmed that the practice of sacrifice on Bakrid, celebrated on May 28, is centuries old and an essential part of Islamic tradition. He clarified that some individuals are spreading misinformation about restrictions on sacrifice in India, while no official orders exist to that effect.
