New Delhi, July 22: The opposition made a clear statement in Parliament on Wednesday, asserting that fair discussions can only occur if Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns from his position.
During a session in the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge called for the resignation of the Education Minister. He emphasized that meaningful discussions can only take place if the minister steps down. Kharge urged the government to accept the resignation of the Education Minister. His remarks came in response to the government’s proposal to discuss issues related to the NEET examination.
Kharge, who is also the Congress President, demanded an immediate discussion on the NEET exam and its associated controversies. He stated that his party and other opposition MPs wish to discuss this matter under Rule 267. Kharge reiterated that the opposition is ready for a discussion but insisted on the resignation of the Education Minister.
He stated that no discussions would be possible until the Education Minister resigns. Kharge insisted that the opposition wants to address this issue under Rule 267 and that the government should first secure the minister’s resignation. He accused the authorities of assaulting protesting students.
Kharge expressed the opposition’s readiness for discussion and clarified that they are not avoiding it. He urged the government to clear the path for a discussion by accepting the Education Minister’s resignation, which would allow for a debate on the subject. The opposition believes that without accountability in this matter, any discussion would be pointless.
Following Kharge’s remarks, the house erupted in slogans. The Deputy Chairman informed the house that significant decisions have previously been made under Rule 267, which still apply to the proceedings. Notices given under Rule 267 have been accepted in the past.
It is noteworthy that under Rule 267, all other proceedings in the Rajya Sabha are suspended, and only the subject for which notice has been given is discussed. Voting provisions are also included at the end of this discussion. The Congress and other opposition members are demanding an immediate discussion under this rule. However, the Chair clarified that various Chairpersons in previous governments have generally rejected this rule, and rulings have been issued in this regard.
