Guwahati, July 22: Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Pradesh Congress President and Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat, has called on the state government to expedite relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts in flood-affected areas. He emphasized that the government’s priority should be to deliver timely assistance to every impacted family.
During his visit to several flood-hit regions in his constituency, Gogoi met with displaced individuals, assessed the ground situation, and distributed relief materials among affected families.
Expressing concern over the devastation caused by the floods, Gogoi noted that the situation remains critical in many parts of Assam. Rising water levels have forced thousands of families to evacuate their homes, with numerous villages submerged and significant damage to infrastructure.
He stated, “The flood situation is extremely severe in Jorhat and several other areas of Assam. Many have lost their homes and livelihoods, while numerous families are grieving the loss of loved ones.”
The Congress MP reported that he engaged with local residents, volunteers, and officials involved in relief operations to gather information on the urgent needs of the affected areas. He urged the government to ensure the uninterrupted provision of relief materials, safe shelters, healthcare services, and rehabilitation facilities.
Gogoi also appealed for adequate compensation for the families of those who lost their lives in the floods and called for a swift restoration of electricity, drinking water, roads, and other essential services in the affected regions. He affirmed that the Congress party will continue to raise issues concerning the interests of flood-affected individuals on every appropriate platform.
According to the latest figures from the Assam government, over 727,000 people have been affected by floods across 25 districts between April 29 and July 21. So far, 31 lives have been lost, and 18,574 displaced individuals are currently sheltered in 95 relief camps. Relief and rescue operations are being conducted jointly by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the army, Assam police, and district administration.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in various parts of Assam over the next four days. Following this warning, the risk of worsening flood conditions in vulnerable areas has increased.
