Jammu, July 22: Senior leader and Lok Sabha MP Mian Altaf Ahmed narrowly escaped a landslide on the Poonch-Jammu National Highway on Wednesday. One of the vehicles in his convoy was caught in the landslide.
Speaking to reporters, Mian Altaf Ahmed confirmed that he was safe and had passed the landslide area when the incident occurred. He stated that everyone in the affected vehicle was unharmed.
Recently, Mian Altaf has been stationed in Rajouri to address the issues faced by flood victims. He has been visiting remote areas impacted by the landslide.
Officials reported that the landslide occurred as he was returning from flood-affected regions in Poonch district. Fortunately, his convoy managed to escape serious harm.
Mian Altaf shared updates on social media platform X, stating, “I reached Rajouri after Poonch to assess the situation caused by the sudden floods and landslides. A landslide occurred while I was en route to Rajouri, which blocked the road. However, I successfully arrived in Rajouri.”
According to reports, heavy rainfall triggered the landslide, causing debris to fall. One vehicle in the MP’s convoy collided with rocks, sustaining damage.
Fortunately, Mian Altaf and all others remained safe. Multiple landslides have caused road blockages, affecting traffic on several highways, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Authorities are urging the public to avoid traveling through landslide-prone areas during inclement weather.
Previously, Mian Altaf had visited several flood-affected areas in Poonch to assess the damage caused by the sudden floods and continuous rainfall. During these visits, he met with affected families, evaluated ground conditions, and urged the administration to expedite rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and the restoration of essential services in the most impacted areas.
