Major Reforms in the Coal Sector Under PM Modis Leadership: G. Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad, June 8: Central Minister G. Kishan Reddy stated that significant reforms have taken place in the coal and mining sectors during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 12-year tenure, yielding positive results. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he noted that twelve years ago, coal shortages were common, and allocations were often made through illegal means.

Additionally, reports of coal scams were prevalent. However, under PM Modi’s leadership, the coal sector has witnessed numerous reforms. Today, such news is rarely heard. Following a Supreme Court order, 124 coal blocks were suspended, while production has commenced transparently in 420 coal blocks. Currently, the country produces 1,000 billion tons of coal annually, marking the highest record since independence.

As of now, five lakh people are directly employed in the coal sector, with an additional 25 lakh working indirectly. The mining sector employs around 50 lakh individuals. The minister emphasized that India has become the second-largest coal producer globally. Furthermore, Coal India is the world’s largest company in coal production, with two of the largest coal mining sectors located in Chhattisgarh. Currently, coal-based thermal projects are underway.

He added that there is no shortage of electricity in any part of India today. Whether in agriculture or industry, all sectors are functioning without any interruptions. The energy needs of the country are being met under PM Modi’s leadership. Overall, it can be said that the power sector is progressing towards a “New India.” The Indian government currently has coal generation reserves for 80 days, indicating a robust position in coal management.
